Bill 64 and the best report

In the spring of 2021, the Government of Manitoba introduced Bill 64, the Education Modernization Act. Among other claims, the Act proposed the elimination of local school boards and the amalgamation of all 37 school divisions into one singular body. At the same time, the Government released its action plan, Better Education Starts Today, in response to the recommendations in the recently released report by the Commission on K-12 Education. If passed in the legislature, the changes proposed in Bill 64 and in the action plan would impact all public K-12 schools in the province.

Bill 64, along with four other pieces of legislation that were delayed, were withdrawn when the legislature resumed in the fall of 2021. However, the Better Education Starts Today (BEST) report is an active strategy that the government will use to inform its reform agenda.
